ARR Craib Transport Ltd In The Running For Prestigious Environmental Award

Aberdeen-based haulage firm ARR Craib Transport Ltd has been shortlisted for a top business accolade in recognition of its efforts to reduce its carbon footprint. The firm, which also has bases in central Scotland and the north of England, is in the running for the Green Award at the Northern Star Business Awards.

The company is a leading provider of transport and logistics services to a wide range of customers, and operates throughout the UK. It hopes the awards nomination will help to dispel the commonly held view that large goods vehicles are polluting juggernauts.

Over the past two years ARR Craib has implemented an initiative to cut down on fuel consumption and reduce unnecessary road miles. This has been backed up by a programme of training, which encourages drivers to drive in an environmentally responsible manner.

Although the efforts being made by ARR Craib are aimed at improving the company’s environmental performance, the savings in fuel have also impacted on financial results. The training scheme has been welcomed by staff, who recognise the value of continual professional development.

The company invested £3 million last financial year to create a clean and green fleet, with 90% of the firm’s 250 vehicles less than three-years-old. Plans are in place to adopt vehicles with the new Euro 6 engines form part of the capital expenditure budget for 2013/14 onwards.

Managing director Eddie Anderson says, “As a haulage company, we feel it is vital that we do what we can to reduce our environmental impact. This doesn’t just apply to vehicles: we want to change attitudes and we encourage our staff members to make a conscious effort in all areas of the business.

“The transport industry is by its very nature a polluter of the environment, but modern society requires transport to function on a day-today basis. If we win this award, we hope it will show that is it possible to meet the needs of society while also respecting the needs of the environment.”

The Northern Star Awards are organised by Aberdeen and Grampian Chamber of Commerce and take place at Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre on 23 September, 2013.The Green Award is presented to the company that has successfully implement a business target to reduce their environmental impact.
