Volvo Trucks expands electric options

Volvo Trucks has expanded its range of vehicles and launched electric rigid versions of its Volvo FH, FM and FMX models. The OEM said the new heavy rigid trucks can be designed to carry electric superstructures for a range of transport assignments, including goods distribution, refuse collection and construction work.

“With these new electric trucks, we are making it easier than ever for even more customers to go electric, and for cities to shift to zero-emission vehicles for virtually all transport flows. Our customers can have these trucks custom-built for their specific operation, to cut emissions while getting the same functionality as the diesel truck they are using today,” said Roger Alm, Volvo Trucks President.

Alm added that customers can specify the battery capacity they require so that the vehicles do not carry more batteries than needed and payload can increase. “In short, we have the optimal and most cost-efficient electric transport solution, no matter what the task is,” he added.

Starting this month, buyers have the option of a 490kW powertrain using three electric motors, which will be offered with five or six batteries offering 450 or 540kWh. It will be offered with Sleeper, High and X-High sleeper cabs, and a wheelbase of 4300-6700mm. There are also four axle configurations (4x2R, 6x2R, 8x2R and 8x4R). Production for those models will begin in March 2023.

A 330kW twin-motor powertrain powered by four batteries totalling 330kW will go on sale in February 2023, with production starting in May. That will be offered with a Day cab and a wheelbase of 3900-6700mm. Finally, examples with two or three battery packs offering 180-270kWh will go on sale in June, with production starting in September.

Different versions of the FH, FM and FMX will go on sale at different times, with production due to begin in the first quarter of 2023.
