Paua Joins Forces With Sainsbury’s EV Charging Network

Paua joins forces with Sainsbury’s EV charging network, Smart Charge, to power electric vehicle drivers nationwide

Paua is delighted to announce a landmark partnership with Smart Charge, the electric vehicle (EV) charging network operated by one of the UK’s most recognisable supermarket brands, Sainsbury’s. This collaboration will give Paua users access to Smart Charge’s ultra-rapid chargers at 69 key locations across the country, further strengthening both parties commitment to seamless EV charging.

What does this mean for drivers?

The addition of Smart Charge to the Paua network adds over 550 renewable-powered chargers designed with driver accessibility in mind. Strategically located at Sainsbury’s locations across the UK, these ultra-rapid chargers offer exceptional convenience, enabling fleet and business drivers to quickly charge their vehicles while passing by, running errands or shopping.

Smart Charge launched at the start of 2024 and continues to expand across the UK.

With the focus on accessibility, providing big roomy bays and ease of use, the chargers make EV charging effortless for drivers of all experience levels. Whether managing a single fleet vehicle or an entire EV operation, Paua users can now benefit from this significant expansion of charging options.

And drivers have the additional benefit of collecting Nectar points when they charge.

Sustainability Meets Convenience

Both Paua and Smart Charge share a dedication to sustainability, and the electricity used to power Smart Charge is 100% renewable. By integrating these chargers into the Paua network, we are driving progress towards a greener future, helping businesses reduce their carbon footprint while supporting the UK’s rapid transition to electric mobility.

Expanding Nationwide Coverage

This partnership significantly enhances Paua’s national footprint, offering unrivalled access to high-quality, reliable charging. Whether you’re in London, Manchester, Edinburgh, or anywhere in between, there’s a Smart Charge site conveniently located to meet your needs.

Niall Riddell, CEO of Paua, said: “Smart Charge’s focus on providing accessible, high-power, renewable-powered chargers aligns perfectly with Paua’s mission to simplify the switch to electric for businesses and fleets. Partnering with a trusted household name like Sainsbury’s helps us offer even greater convenience to our users and makes it easier than ever for businesses to embrace sustainable transport.”

Patrick Dunne, Director of Property, Procurement and EV Ventures at Sainsbury’s said ““Smart Charge continues to go from strength to strength and we’re delighted to be starting 2025 with the news that Paua has chosen to collaborate with us – giving all of its customers direct access to our 24/7, convenient and reliable ultra-rapid charging hubs. This partnership represents another step forwards in our ambition to make EV charging simple and accessible to everyone.”

 Supporting the UK’s Electric Future

The addition of over 550 Smart Charge chargers brings Paua’s network to over 58,000 charge points at more than 18,500 locations nationwide. As businesses continue to transition to electric vehicles, partnerships like this ensure they have access to the reliable, renewable-powered charging infrastructure they need.

Paua’s technology is built ground up by their own in-house team and developed specifically for businesses with electric fleets. This has enabled them to win awards such as Start up of the year in 2023 and multiple business partnerships including Motability Go Charge and cinchCharge.

The Future of EV Charging Is Here

Paua’s collaboration with Smart Charge represents another step forward in transforming the EV charging landscape. With accessible, renewable-powered, high-speed charging now available at 69 Sainsbury’s stores nationwide, Paua is ensuring that the UK’s EV fleet drivers have the tools they need to charge confidently and sustainably, wherever they go.
