Businesses are being urged to create an environment that would improve the road risk management. Companies have been encouraged to create a culture that would lead to more drivers taking a bigger responsibility for their actions which includes allowing drivers the choice to not drive if they do not feel safe doing so.

There has also been calls for a board-level buy-in that would see a change to the at-work driving safety mentality as most of the time businesses fail to take into account risk management for on the road because of corporate attitudes. Therefore there is a lack of risk management for working on the roads.

Other areas of road safety have also been called on to be addressed including making sure that businesses maintain tyres and make sure that smooth driving is encouraged. Figures show that some of the main causes for road crashes are driver fatigue, stress and poor planning as well as work load and home life pressures. Businesses are being implored to take this into account by the ICFM while they attend their road safety masterclasses. As well as this masterclass there has also been an Emergency Fleet Exhibition and a Conference for the National Association of Police Fleet Managers. Both of these have taken place at the International Centre in Telford.

Making sure that road operations are safe in vital for companies that have employees on the road frequently. Operating on the road safely and efficiently is a safety factor and failing to do this could have legal consequences, but also properly maintaining the vehicle, such as ensuring that tyre management is carried out properly has safety benefits but also works to cut costs down for the company. It should be important for every company that they make sure that their drivers are safe while on the road and working, possibly in a vehicle with signage, a company’s reputation is partially made from how employees act while in uniform or in labelled vehicles, therefore road safety should be a priority for businesses.
