Activa Contracts’ sales and marketing director Lisa Temperton raised more than £3,000 for charity by climbing up and walking on the wings of a biplane as it took to the skies. She was part of a 10-strong ‘Wings of Hope’ team that aims to raise £24,000 for Hope for Tomorrow.

The charity’s mission is to bring cancer treatment closer to patients’ homes by providing a Mobile Cancer Care Unit (MCCU) to every oncology centre within the UK. At the moment, there are 10 Units operating across the UK and two reserve MCCUs, which were launched earlier this year.

Ms Temperton’s sponsors have so far contributed more than £2,000, while Activa Contracts’ parent company, the Arnold Clark Group, Europe’s largest independently-owned vehicle dealer group, has pledged to match the amount raised up to £1,000.

“I’d like to thank all of the people who kindly donated. I am so pleased to have raised money for such an amazing cause. The wing walk was an unbelievable experience and I loved it so much that I went up twice! A truly fantastic day,” said Lisa.

The Wings of Hope team was led by charity founder and trustee Christine Mills and it also included Derek Bell, five times winner of the Le Mans 24-hour race and a charity patron. Another ‘high-flier’ was BBC3 ‘This Country’ star Michael Sleggs.

“Overall the day was a huge success with 10 participants. Ages ranged from our youngest at 19 and the oldest, a long standing supporter of Hope for Tomorrow, Suzanne Barr at 84! So far we have raised £17,000 from the team’s tremendous efforts, and the funds are still rolling in,” said Christine Mills.

Each bespoke MCCU costs £265,000 to build and maintain for the first four years of its life and continues to be owned and maintained by the charity. Hope for Tomorrow also provides each operating Trust with a nurses’ support car, which allows nurses to travel freely between the oncology centre and the daily treatment location of Hope for Tomorrow’s MCCU.
