A ‘Smashing’ Development
Good progress is being made at the Port of Dover on its multi-million pound Traffic Management Improvement (TMI) project as the Port works to ensure that it is providing its customers with excellent service within a world class port facility.
Demolition works are well underway and there is a real sense of transformation as the Eastern Docks begins to take on a new and improved modern look in a year that sees it celebrate its 60th anniversary as a ferry terminal.
Tim Waggott, Chief Operating Officer, said: “The Eastern Docks has served the nation for the past sixty years as it has evolved into the world class port business we see today. Throughout that time, there has been significant investment in order that the Port keeps pace with the demands placed upon it as an international gateway. Today this is even more the case as we oversee a comprehensive investment programme totalling £85 million that will transform our Port and the levels of customer service we can offer.”
Handling up to 160km of trucks a day, it is essential that Europe’s busiest international ferry port is capable of managing the throughput of traffic effectively and TMI will add a level of resilience through enhanced operational flexibility and additional capacity, thereby reducing congestion on the external road network.
It is also critical that such an important and high intensity 24/7 operation is not adversely affected during the several years of major works being undertaken for the TMI project. Excellent project management is required and this is what has so far been delivered; to the extent that the Port has been able to remove some of the traffic management arrangements in place a month earlier than originally stated.
Mr Waggott added: “We are delighted with the overall progress being made, and in particular the way in which we are constantly refining and improving how we deliver TMI and reducing the impact on our customers. Once complete, this project will greatly benefit our Port, our customers and our community.”
The TMI project is due to be completed in 2015.
