Mercedes Vans Unveils Futuristic Business Plans

Mercedes-Benz Vans has launched a series of new initiatives and business models for its light commercial vehicles under the banner of ‘adVANce’. With the announcement of the scheme, the firm has signalled its intentions to concentrate on three areas with its future vehicles and strategies: incorporating vans into the Internet of Things with the use of smart technology and telematics; automated cargo systems to increase efficiency of deliveries an loading; and new mobility concepts such as using vans as “rideshares” or supplementary transport during busy periods.

The firm also unveiled its Vision Van concept vehicle – an all-electric LCV designed for last-mile deliveries that is claimed to “digitally connect all people and processes involved, from the distribution centre to the consignee”. It also includes an automatic cargo space and drones that can deliver multiple parcels to nearby destinations.

“The intelligent automation technology connects the entire process, from loading and transportation by road through to delivery to the consignee,” said head of Mercedes-Benz Vans, Volker Mornhinweg, “this makes it easier for the deliverer to do business and rapidly reduces the delivery time.”

The move follows the company’s most successful half-year to date, with a 21% increase in sales to a total of 176,200 units.
