Norbert Dentressangle Supports Shanks Waste Management

Norbert Dentressangle has been appointed by Shanks Waste Management Limited to manage the European export of low carbon fuel from its Kettering and Glasgow materials recycling facilities (MRF).

Headquartered in Milton Keynes, Shanks is a leading international sustainable waste management business with over 4,000 employees. The company provides a range of recycling and renewable energy products to customers in the public and private sectors.

Shanks was looking for a reliable and experienced provider to manage the transport of refuse derived fuel (RDF) from Kettering and Glasgow into energy recovery facilities in Holland and Germany, under the strict rules and regulations of Transfrontier shipment (TFS) movements of waste. Norbert Dentressangle was appointed due to its extensive industry knowledge, flexibility and ability to offer both direct collections, as well as stand trailers for the shipment of baled fuel.

Using Norbert Dentressangle’s International service, around 3,500 movements are made a year by a fleet of 13.6m tautliner vehicles along specific routes and ports of exit/entry that are licensed for waste transport.

Unlike traditional incinerators, the facilities used by Shanks and Norbert Dentressangle are R1-accredited. This means that they are capable of extracting energy from RDF with a very high efficiency rate, and are therefore recognised as being ‘energy recovery’, rather than ‘disposal’ operations. The relatively high biogenic biomass content means that Shanks’ recovered fuel has significantly lower fossilised carbon emissions than a pure fossil fuel.

Commenting on the appointment of Norbert Dentressangle, Louis Calders, Products Director at Shanks, said: “Shanks was one of the first to recognise the demand for low-carbon fuel from continental Europe, and therefore we have been at the forefront of fuel export industry since 2010. As we operate in a highly regulated industry, we not only required hauliers that are reliable and cost-effective, but which had extensive experience in environmental compliance, and shared our vision for environmental sustainability and innovation. Norbert Dentressangle met this criteria in abundance.”

Paul Caruana, Norbert Dentressangle International’s Strategic Account Manager, who manages waste transport operations, said: “We are delighted that Shanks has recognised the expertise Norbert Dentressangle can provide in managing the transport of low carbon waste to Europe. Our solution supports the company’s environmental aims of diverting waste away from landfill and to create viable energy from waste.”
