Bank Holiday Exodus Set To Hit Traffic In South East

INRIX warns drivers of congestion on Friday and Monday afternoon as it reveals the South East will see the worst congestion

Predictions:

“The promise of showers is unlikely to deter road travellers from making journeys this Bank Holiday. The South East will see the worst congestion and this is likely to be compounded by the threat of industrial action on the tube between Saturday and Tuesday , pushing more cars onto the road network and out of the capital in time for the big getaway on Friday. Congestion won’t just be confined to the South East though. With the promise of decent weather, coastal routes and major roads between London and the West Country and between the North and South of the UK are also likely to be hard hit.

Motorists should be ready for Friday, 23rd May evening’s peak to start much earlier than usual, around midday. Congestion will peak at 5pm when a typical 60 minute journey in the most congested areas will take on average 90 minutes. This Bank Holiday’s busiest periods will be on Friday 23rd May with traffic levels dropping slightly after the morning peak and then gradually rising from midday to peak at 5pm. Monday 26th May will see a peak between10am and 2pm.

It’s not all bad news though. The Highways Agency has committed to lifting 75% of roadworks to help minimise congestion and smooth journeys over the bank holiday weekend.

The best and worst times to travel

On Friday, May 23rd the best times to travel will be between 10am and 12pm and after 7pm. The worst times to travel will be between 8am and 9am and between 5pm and 6pm.

On Monday, May 26th the best times to travel will be before 9am and after 4pm.

Advice for drivers

Chris Lambert, traffic intelligence expert, INRIX says: “The late May Bank Holiday is always busy as it tends to be when the sun starts shining in the UK. Whether you are heading home or towards the sun, make sure you don’t leave straight after work on Friday and avoid returning late afternoon on Monday, even though you may be tempted.”
