Tech giant Google is in talks with the Federal Aviation Administration about developing a regulatory framework for commercial drone operation. Google is aiming to have a commercial drone-based delivery business in operation by 2017.
Google has said it plans to begin delivering packages to its customers using drones in 2017.
The company is talks with the Federal Aviation Administration in America and other stakeholders about setting up an air traffic control system for drones. The planned system would use cellular and internet technology to co-ordinate unmanned aerial vehicle flights at altitudes under 500ft. The first step will be establishing a drone registry, which the Obama administration hopes to have in place by 20 December, which could use wireless telecommunications and cellphone apps to identify drones and keep them clear of other aircraft and restricted airspace.
