The Transport Secretary Chris Grayling has been praising the work of the Freight Transport Association in order to attract the next generation of logistics workers. The Transport Secretary met with the Chief Executive of the trade association, David Wells, at the Skills Show which took place in Birmingham yesterday.

Chris Grayling was taken on a tour of the FTA’s stand at the event, which was used in order to advertise the services and support that can be offered by the association. At the moment there is a shortage in the number of skilled workers throughout the logistics industry. It is thought that around 52,000 truck drivers are urgently required as well as engineers and specialist HGV technicians. While at The Skills Show, Mr. Grayling has said that he is impressed by the different work that is being carried out by the FTA in order to foster more cooperation between employers in order to address the skills shortage.

The trade association is vitally involved in logistics operations, working hard to bring the industry together in order to work on all skills needed while also creating something that is really valuable. There are times when there is fierce competition between haulage companies. However, there are also periods where it is needed that the industry comes together in order to find the next generation of skilled workers. With the work that is being carried out by the FTA, more companies are working together in order to benefit the industry as a whole.

The Skills Show at the Birmingham EC will take place over three days, and the FTA team will be on hand at the trade show in order to meet hundreds of young people in order to tell them about the varied and exciting career opportunities in the freight and logistics sector.
