GEAR 2030 Report on Future of the Automotive Industry

The IAAF, member of FIGIEFA has welcomed the final report for the High Level Group, GEAR 2030. The report has set out the analysis the Group has made from the key trends in the industry and the challenges that could have an effect on the European automotive industry.

The GEAR 2030 Group was created by the European Commission, with a number of EU Member States and representatives for the whole of the automotive sector. The release of this final report is the result of two years’ hard work by those in the group, who have been working to explore the future of the automotive industry. FIGIEFA was a part of the High Level Group and the organisation has used their participation in this forward-planning collective in order to help to bring the independent automotive aftermarket into perspective.

The GEAR 2030 Report illustrates the analysis that has been carried out by the High Level Group into the current and projected state of the automotive industry. The report and exploration carried out by the organisation has taken into account the real and fast paced landscape of the industry. The Report also includes a number of recommendations for EU policy initiatives.

Another benefit from the formation of this High Level Group is that the representative work together and can offer a perspective across the whole automotive sector. As a part of this, The Gear 2030 Group shows in their Report that the automotive sector will face a profound transformation which is due to the changes that are taking place due to digitalisation, automation and connected driving. The different societal changes taking place will also have an impact on the automotive industry, FIGIEFA and the other European associations in this group have stressed as a part of this publication that having access to in-vehicle data is vital for the development of digital innovation.

The Report includes Recommendation 26 which puts forward a call to the commission to assess whether the additional sector-specific legislation is required in order to access to vehicle data. FIGIEFA and IAAF is extremely encouraged by the contents of the final report and is especially positive about the calls for Recommendation 26.
