Build Up to Steve Hanshaw International Gold Cup

Build Up to Steve Hanshaw International Gold Cup

The Oliver’s Mount racing team are in preparation for the Steve Henshaw International Gold Cup which will take place on the 23rd and 24th of September. The race will take place this weekend at the seaside town of Scarborough and it is expected that thousands of fans will travel to the town for the only road race track in England to be used.

The race covers 2.5 mile which has been popular for 70 years. The public road wraps around Oliver’s Mount, but the area will be transformed into a motor racing track. The track is utilised four times a year, with the biggest race meeting being the Gold Cup.

A range of popular names are expected to be racing at this years event, and in the past a number of familiar names have driven off with the title including Giacomo Agostini, Barry Sheene, Mick Grant, Guy Martin and John Mcguinness.

Dean Harrison has raced at Oliver’s Mount in his event for the last three years, and has managed to win almost every race that he has started. In 2017 Dean has remained dominant and has won the Spring Cup and the Cock O’The North feature races. Heading into this weekend’s meeting, it is clear that Dean is an obvious favourite. Dean Harrison’s biggest competitor ahead of the International Gold Cup is the local rider, Daley Mathieson. From Stockton-On-Tees, Daley has completed a lap this year that broke the long standing record that was held by Guy Martin, but was still beaten by Dean Harrison. If both of these riders are on form this weekend it could be a tough fight for the top spot.

Michael Dunlop will also be returning to Oliver’s Mount this season after having a strong season of racing so far. Michael has suffered from a number of mechanical faults this year, which has prevented him from being a dominant force in road racing, although he has the skill and the speed to win.
