Bank Rate Hike Adds Pressure To Logistics Sector

The Bank of England’s decision to increase interest rates will place additional pressure on logistics businesses already facing rising costs, according to business group Logistics UK. Commenting on today’s (5 November) announcement, the organisation’s Chief Executive Ben Fletcher said:

“The decision by the Bank of England to increase interest rates to 4.0% will add further pressure to UK logistics businesses at a time when many operators are already managing tight margins and ongoing cost challenges. Higher interest rates raise the cost of borrowing, making it more expensive for firms to invest in new vehicles, warehousing, technology and other productivity-enhancing assets. This will impact smaller companies, which places undue pressure on an industry where 99% of firms are SMEs.

“While the move may help bring inflation under control over the longer term, the short-term impact is likely to be felt through increased operating costs and potentially weaker consumer and business demand, which can reduce freight volumes across the supply chain. For a sector that underpins every part of the economy, sustained high borrowing costs risk slowing investment at a time when improving productivity, resilience and capacity remain critical to supporting UK economic growth.”

Business group Logistics UK champions the logistics sector, the backbone of the UK economy and global trade, providing a unique, authoritative voice for its members.
