Toyota Automated Logistics modernizes the intralogistics of Hummel AG during ongoing production
At a time when many industrial companies are postponing investments or relocating production abroad, Hummel AG is sending a deliberate signal: the manufacturer of connection technology is making targeted investments in its headquarters in Denzlingen, southern Baden. A central element of this investment is the conversion and new construction of the warehouse area, for which Toyota Automated Logistics (TAL) has been commissioned as the general contractor. The new joint project also represents the consistent continuation of the long-standing partnership between Hummel AG and the intralogistics specialist viastore, which has been part of Toyota Automated Logistics since April 2026.
The expansion of Hummel AG’s plant includes a new nickel-plating system, as well as the integration of machining operations currently carried out at the Waldkirch site into the company’s headquarters in Denzlingen. To this end, the old pallet warehouse must also make way for a new one to be rebuilt – while operations continue. For Toyota Automated Logistics, this represents a dual challenge: developing a future-proof intralogistics concept while simultaneously ensuring a comprehensive interim concept for the transition period. The expertise, innovative technologies and systems of Toyota Automated Logistics enable a seamless shift to modern logistics processes and create the conditions for increased efficiency, flexibility and long-term competitiveness.
Markus Biller, Project Manager at Hummel AG:
The decision to expand our main plant is a clear commitment to Germany as a business location, to our employees and to a modern, sustainable industry. This will lay the foundation for us to continue developing and manufacturing technologies that our customers around the world can rely on in the years ahead. A central element of this mammoth task is the work of Toyota Automated Logistics, which, with its expertise and technology, is not only making our logistics and intralogistics fit for the future through state-of-the-art technology and processes but is also ensuring a smooth changeover during ongoing operations, without disrupting production.
As part of the conversion and new construction of the pallet warehouse, the existing automated small-parts warehouse (AS/RS), equipped with viaspeed storage and retrieval machines, will also be modernized. This will include the implementation of the current version of Toyota Automated Logistics’ viadat warehouse management system. These measures will enable higher storage capacity and throughput, optimized material flow, and greater energy efficiency in intralogistics.
Thomas Hibinger, CEO Toyota Automated Logistics, EMEA & APAC:
We are very pleased to continue our long-standing, successful partnership with Hummel AG and to support the plant expansion regarding the redesign and simultaneous modernization of its logistics and intralogistics processes. Toyota Automated Logistics is developing the final concept and system while also maintaining uninterrupted operations throughout the conversion and construction phases.
The installation of the system will begin in February 2027 and will be implemented gradually in several project phases. The go-live of the new system is scheduled for December 2028. With this investment, Hummel AG is sustainably strengthening its logistics and intra-processes and, together with TAL, creating the basis for long-term successful and competitive operations at its headquarters in Denzlingen.
