TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice Awards has named the UK airline Jet2 the best low-cost airline in the UK and the seventh best in the world, while British Airways, EasyJet, and Ryanair failed to make the grade in the travel planning and booking site’s awards.
The winners were determined by an algorithm that took into account the quantity and quality of the airline reviews and ratings submitted by travellers worldwide over a 12 month period on TripAdvisor Flights.
“We have been beating the competition to win prestigious awards in the UK for some time, and now we are taking that success on to a global stage,” said Steve Heapy, chief executive of Jet2.com and Jet2holidays. “The TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice awards for airlines are based on the experiences of paying customers, which makes them truly representative and all the more rewarding to receive as a result.”
The Leeds-based airline has grown during the past years and it became Britain’s number four airline, carrying seven million passengers a year.
The biggest winner at TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice Awards this year was Singapore Airlines, which claimed the title of the top airline in the world. In addition, the airline also took awards for Best First Class and Best Economy Class in the world.
Among the top ten best-rated airlines in the world, Air New Zealand and Emirates come in at second and third place respectively. Asia holds the highest number of individual winners in the world top ten with four winning carriers – Singapore Airlines, Japan Airlines, EVA air and Korean Air.
For Europe, the top low cost airlines were Jet2, Blue Air from Romania, and Thomas Cook Airlines, while the top major airlines were Virgin Atlantic Airways, Turkish Airlines, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, Swiss International Air Lines, Lufthansa, Aeroflot, Austrian Airlines, Finnair, SAS and S7 Airlines.
