The National Refuse Championships will be back this year at Weston-super-Mare on Friday the 15th and Saturday the 16th of June 2018. The first ever event took place last year at the same location where more than 100 refuse vehicle drivers and loaders across the country gathered to compete in a series of races.
Aylesbury Vale District Council won the title of National Refuse Champions and due to the contest more than £12,000 was raised for The Alzheimer’s Society. The competition ended up being so successful that the organisers, Refuse Vehicle Solutions Ltd (RVS), decided to bring it back this year as well.
“I’ve wanted to create the National Refuse Championships for years, but it wouldn’t have been possible without the amazing support and generosity of friends, family, staff and the waste management industry. We are well underway with preparations for this year’s event, which is going to be bigger and better, and we hope to raise even more money for The Alzheimer’s Society,” said Spencer Law, Managing Director of RVS and Founder of the NRC.
The NRC is a day in which the refuse collection crews and the valuable jobs they do are celebrated and members of the public are welcome to join in as spectators, free of charge. The winners of last year, Aylesbury Vale District Council, have signed up two teams, one of which is all-female. Each member of the winning team will receive vouchers for a Center Parcs holiday, the second place members will receive £250 worth of Buy-A-Gift Vouchers, and the third place team members will receive £200 worth of Spa Day Vouchers.
This year’s event is going to be bigger and the number of teams participating has doubled, with 29 crews from all over the UK already signing up. On Friday the 15th of June there will be an exhibition that will include seminars, presentations, and product demonstrations, as well as activities for schools and children. The races will take place on Saturday from 10am until 5:30pm and the event will end with a party in Marquee on the Beach Lawns with live music and Fish ‘n’ Chips.
