Network Rail are performing upgrade works at Bath Spa station. Travelers that use this station are advised to check before starting on their journeys. Network Rail are spending £15 million on upgrades. The work that is being carried out by the engineers at Network Rail will allow for larger and more comfortable trains to use the station. These new trains are expected on the railway later this year.
The work will be carried out between Saturday 8th April and Sunday 23rd April. The engineers will be realigning the tracks at Bath Spa station which will then make space available to for the platforms to be required. The work carried out will also reduce the stepping distance between the carriages and the platform by 50%.
The larger trains will be part of the Intercity Express Trains that are expected in operation this lather in 2017. It is thought that these trains will add more seats to the services as well as allowing passengers to have a more comfortable journey. The modernisation works are happening over the Easter period and are part of the wider network upgrades. The work will see the upgrades applied to the Great Western Main Line, which is thought to be one of the oldest parts of the British rail network. The network in this area as well as Bath itself are included in a world heritage site, therefore is important that plans to upgrade the rail network do not damage this heritage. Network Rail have worked with English Heritage, Historic England, and Bath and North East Somerset Council over the course of 18 months to discuss the development plans in order to modernise the railway while maintaining the surroundings.
Trains will be expected to run through the stations on weekdays throughout the two-week period the developments are taking place. During the bank holidays and weekends the services will be diverted and buses will be put on to replace the normal train service.
