New container terminal at Port of Montréal

The Port of Montréal has celebrated the opening of a new container terminal in the Viau sector.

It will aim to enhance the port’s infrastructure by boosting its handling capacity by 450,000 TEU and making the movement of goods more fluid.

Sylvie Vachon, president and CEO of the Montréal Port Authority, said: “The new Viau terminal will have a considerable impact, ultimately it will increase the Port of Montréal’s handling capacity by 2.1m TEU and generate significant benefits for the region, province and country as a whole.”

She added: “The success of the project is the result of a significant collaboration between public and private organisations, including Termont Montréal Inc and Mediterranean Shipping Company. Moreover, the work was carried out with concern for communities and the environment.”

The new terminal, together with the work done previously and the second phase of work to be completed in the years to come, will bring the total handling capacity in the Viau sector to 600,000 TEU. The overall handling capacity of Port of Montréal will rise to 2.1 million TEU.

The construction of the new terminal is part of a broader port capacity optimisation project covering three essential areas: the terminal’s container-handling capacity, marine access and road access.
