Harlequin’s Loving Spoonful
Harlequin Logistics has announced details of its recent contract win with Tate & Lyle Sugars.
The East London-based sugar manufacturer has engaged the services of the transport collaboration specialist which is co-owned by five leading private hauliers.
Operating on behalf of Tate & Lyle Sugars, Harlequin is responsible for regular stock movements between the Silvertown production site and a number of warehouses around the UK.
Tate & Lyle Sugars’ UK Contract and Development Manager, Nic Miller, said that Harlequin’s ability to provide a flexible solution using owned assets was key to his company’s decision.
He said: “We have worked with Harlequin shareholder Prestons of Potto for some time, and when they introduced us to Harlequin we quickly realised it was a good fit for us. Because they almost never sub-contract a load, Harlequin provides us with consistent, reliable service across the whole UK, without regional weakness.”
Harlequin flexes its resources to match the peaks and troughs of Tate & Lyle Sugars’ business, thus ensuring its customers’ costs track volume throughout the year. MD Paul Smith views this as an important facet of his company’s offering to both Tate & Lyle Sugars and other manufacturers.
He said: “Our five shareholders operate around 1200 general haulage vehicles between them, and this enables us to offer levels of reliability and flexibility which set us apart from our competitors. It makes it very easy to ramp up at peak, or turn the tap off during quieter times, without impacting on either cost or performance levels.”
