Tenovus Cancer Care’s mobile support unit, which delivers Chemotherapy treatment in communities across Wales, has been kept on the road thanks to WG Davies and MAN Truck & Bus UK.

The two companies have teamed up to provide a £25,000 package to provide a ‘tractor’ to pull the unit, which weighs more than 20 tonnes and is over 15 metres long. The unit, which is staffed by trained nurses and helps hundreds of patients every year, provides a real alternative to treatment in hospital.

This is the second time the two organisations have come together to support Tenovus Cancer Care. They made a similar package back in 2009 when the mobile support unit was first launched.

MAN Truck & Bus had provided the vehicle for two years, while WG Davies is offering the maintenance package.

Tenovus Cancer Care has two mobile support units delivering treatment across Wales. As well as chemotherapy, patients can also receive treatment for lymphedema, a common side effect of cancer. In the past 12 months, the two mobile support units have travelled more than 31,000 miles across Wales and staff on board have given 3,673 treatments to 1,319 patients.

Tenovus Cancer Care Chief Executive, Claudia McVie, said: “We’re so grateful to WG Davies and MAN for their generosity. Our Mobile Support Units are a key part of our services and make a real difference to people’s lives.

“Nurses and patients agree that the Mobile Support Unit is a fantastic place for treatment. It’s a calmer, more relaxing space where nurses have more time to spend with each patient which can be difficult in a hospital setting.

“By continuing to keep us on the road, WG Davies and MAN are helping us to deliver cancer treatment where it’s most needed; at the heart of communities.”

Roger Davies, of WG Davies, said: “WG Davies is delighted to support Tenovus in its work delivering cancer care to the heart of our communities across Wales. If patients are able to have their treatment closer to home that helps ease their burden and we are glad we are in a position to be part of this service.”

John Davies, head of UK service and support for MAN, added: “MAN Truck & Bus UK is pleased to be supporting Tenovus in its delivery of cancer care services. The fact that patients are treated in their communities makes a real difference to their lives and those of their families. So many people are touched by cancer in their families it is something that we are proud to be able to support.”
