The brand new ‘API SN Plus’ specification has been claimed by Exol on Optima DX1 5W-30 (M497), the new generation, fully synthetic passenger car engine oil formulated with premium base stocks and specialised performance additives.
The new API specification can be claimed by any manufacturer worldwide starting with the 1st of May. The industry standard has been created in response to issues relating to Low Speed Pre-Ignition (LSPI) or severe engine knock, which can destroy pistons and connecting rods.
Many downsized, turbocharged, petrol director injection engines are entering the market, placing specific demands on the engine lubricant; meaning that next-generation motor oils need to pass an LSPI test to meet these new demands. With this in mind, Optima DX1 5W-30 has been specifically formulated to reduce LSPI problems.
A lot of OEMs have started now to introduce oil requirements specifically designed to prevent LSPI. For instance, GM has recently released a specification called ‘dexos1 Gen 2’, which is required for all of its GDI engines.
By claiming the new ‘API SN Plus’ specification, Exol showed its commitment to developing cutting edge solutions to emerging challenges. Optima DX 5W-30 has also been designed to meet the stringent LSPI-prevention requirements of the GM dexos1 Gen 2 specification.
