EU Commissioner Visits Bristol Port
The EU’s Commissioner for Transport, Siim Kallas visited the Port of Bristol on Friday as part of a one day visit to the west at the invitation of MEP Sir Graham Watson.
Sir Graham and the Commissioner were given a tour of the port site as well as a chance to meet with co-owner David Ord and Chief Executive Simon Bird.
Commenting on the visit, Sir Graham said:
“I was fascinated to hear of the sheer scale of goods that come through the port each year. The port of Bristol is a real lifeline for the UK in terms of commodities and raw materials and employs over 500 people directly as well as hundreds more through the operations of businesses using the port.
“The Commissioner and I heard first-hand the major turnaround the port has gone through over the past twenty years and the challenges it faces in the future. The visit was also timely as the EU port services directive is currently going through its legislative process and senior port members had a chance to question the Commissioner on its draft proposals.”
